Jefferson, GA (May 5, 2008)
–Richard Johns turned in another stellar performance Saturday night racing to a fifth-place finish in the Georgia Asphalt Series (GAS) 100-lap main event at Peach State Speedway in Jefferson, GA.

Johns, who steers the No. 59 Sadler-Hamilton entry in the NASCAR Camping World Series this season, wheeled his family-owned Richard Johns Motorsports  No. 43 Schoenfeld Headers/Bilstein Shock Absorbers Ford Fusion (left) to the solid finish Saturday.

“It was a really good run,” said Johns. “We probably should have finished a little higher, but I’m happy with how things turned out. We had a great side-by-side race with Joey Senter over the final 20 laps for the fourth spot and Joey just got me at the finish. Bottom line is we had a lot of fun, a good car, and we’re taking it home in one piece.”

Johns, a Lawrenceville, GA native, was competing in his second GAS event of the season after posting a fifth-place effort at Peach State on April 6. Saturday’s events stated off well for the University of North Carolina – Charlotte Motorsports Engineering graduate, but then took a downward turn in qualifying.

“The car drove perfectly in practice,” Johns stated. “It wasn’t the fastest car in the show, but it drove great. Then in qualifying, it just didn’t seem as good on new tires. We didn’t pick up as much as we had hoped to and that meant we had to start a little farther back than I would have liked to.”

Rolling off 11th in the 28-car field, Johns quickly moved his way toward the front on the well worn Peach State half-mile oval. By the midway portion of the race, the 26-year-old driver was in the Top-5 and looking for more.

“We were a little tight in the corners, but the car was still driving pretty well,” said Johns. “If anything, it almost seemed like we were a little down on horsepower since the last time we raced there. I’m not sure if we have a little engine problem, of if I didn’t get the jetting right on the carburetor. This was the first time we ran unleaded fuel at Peach State and that might have had something to do with it.”

Despite the handicap, Johns was able to stage the solid battle for fourth-place with Senter over the final laps

My car would run on the bottom and Joey was up in the top groove,” said Johns (right). “I could drive under him pretty easily in the corners, but I just couldn’t get the bite up off the turn to make it stick. I wish we could have gotten by him for fourth, but it was a good race and we put on a great show for the fans.”

Johns will run a select number of GAS races this summer and will next return to the driver’s seat for the NASCAR Camping World event at Iowa Speedway on Sunday, May 18. Johns, who ran as high as fourth and eventually finished 13th in the NCW Eastern Division season opener at Greenville-Pickens Speedway on April 19, is looking forward to the event.

“I’ll be doing so engineering work for Stanton Barrett early this week at the Charlotte Sprint Cup test and then I will be headed for Nashville and a Camping World test with Sadler-Hamilton on Thursday,” Johns stated. “We’re going to take two cars to the test, including one that was originally built as a 110-inch wheelbase Cup car for Bobby Hamilton, Sr. It will be interesting to see how the little longer chassis works and if it’s the right car for us to take to Iowa later this month. I’m sure it’s going to be a productive test.”
